neida Casino, which has four gaming locations in Green Bay, Wisconsin, is set to launch sports betting in mid to late November. Supply chain issues and delays with software technology have pushed the rollout two months after the start of NFL season. Officials now anticipate retail and kiosk options to be up and running by the end of NFL Week 11, reports NBC 26.
“We initially anticipated opening for the football season. We weren’t able to meet that timeline,” said Chad Fuss, Chief Financial Officer of Oneida Casino.
Governor Tony Evers signed an amendment to the state’s compact with Oneida Nation on July 1, 2021, expanding gambling offerings to sporting events wagering. Following approval by the Department of the Interior,the casino partnered with International Gaming Technology to provide their PlaySports technology as the betting platform, with intentions to have systems up and running before the 2021 NFL season kickoff, on September 9.
“Right after we signed that contract, at the end of summer, we started working on what our sportsbook would look like,” further explained Fuss, according to the previously cited news source. “And we identified that we would have some constraints, meaning the supply chain, which is mostly [due to] global pandemic right now, of getting different software, getting the chips in. So Oneida casino and IGT are not immune to that.”
Officials now estimate kiosk and retail wagering to be available mid to late November, between NFL weeks 9 and 11. An initial plan will see the opening of a temporary location on the gaming floor. Coinciding with that, the casino will launch construction at its current sports bar “to be more conducive” to its sports bet booking operations.
A mobile app is also set to be launched in the future, which will be only available on reservation property, as stated in the expanded compact signed with the state. There will be a total of eight approved locations, including the casinos, limited by geofencing.
In July, Oneida Casino became the first tribal casino cleared for sports betting in the state. The governor and the tribe announced the deal at the tribe’s casino, which allows betting on a number of sporting events, although it does not permit betting on college sports.
Both Evers and Oneida officials remain confident wagering will create new opportunities for the tribe, as well as boosting tourism. While the wagering amendment doesn’t call for the tribe to increase its payments to the state, if event wagering generates more revenue for the tribe, the state will also see more taxation revenue.
