Interactive gaming and sports betting technology company Elys Game Technology has announced that, on December 31, the company’s wholly-owned subsidiary Elys Gameboard Technologies received approval for a Type C sports Gaming Proprietor license from the Ohio Casino Control Commission for a period of 5 years effective January 1, 2023.

A Type C sports Gaming Host license enables establishments to install kiosks that may take up to $700 per week in bets from adults in the Buckeye State. The kiosks are set to be programmed by separately licensed sports betting proprietors such as Elys with four types of wagers, including point spreads on individual games, and parlays involving four games per bet.

According to a press release, Elys’ commencement of betting transactions in Ohio remains subject to ongoing proprietor suitability and continuous maintenance of compliance requirements of the Ohio Lottery, as well as “any additional required compliance and certifications” for the duration of the license.

As previously announced, the company has commenced programming of its technology platform to comply with betting compliance specifications of the Ohio Lottery and while actively pursuing as many as up to 3,000 potentially approved host locations available, plans to launch the currently signed 100-plus host locations in phases commencing in the first half of 2023 and “in time for ensuing major league sports season in mid-August.”

“With over 30 plus years of experience in the small business leisure betting sector, the company intends to invest in the proper infrastructure to protect the integrity of the market and prior to launching, ensure problem-free operations for our hosts for years to come. We, and our partners, are committed to providing the best possible solution for sports bettors and long-term prosperity for our host operators in Ohio,” the business said in a statement.

Last year, Elys Chairman Mike Ciavarella spoke with Yogonet on the company’s expansion plans for Ohio. “Since the gross gaming revenue for the state could potentially reach $300 to $400 million in its first full year, the opportunity in Ohio is certainly one that we could not ignore,” he said at the time.

“Ohio legislators took a view that makes a lot of sense in the sports betting business. This wide range of distribution gives sports bettors multiple options for placing their bets and closely replicates the European landscape,” he noted. “This strong relationship with Elys’ origins and experience raises our expectations of successfully capturing a significant slice of the market in Ohio.”
