The town of Littleton, New Hampshire, is set to hold an information meeting on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of a charitable casino opening on its Main Street.
The proposed casino development would be located at a property that is currently home to a Staples store just outside the downtown area. It would have up to 25 gaming tables and more than 150 slot-style machines, reports WCAX.
G2 Gaming, the company behind the proposal, estimates profits could be as high as $2 million a year. As per New Hampshire law, part of that win would be earmarked for charities. However, residents have shown a mixed reception to the plan: while some see it as an opportunity for economic growth, others fear it could fuel gambling addiction.
“What we could find, from having another business like a casino, could be more people come to Littleton as a destination place,” said Art Tighe, the owner of Foto Factory, as per the cited source. The proliferation of casinos in New Hampshire is attributed to a 2021 law that allowed slot-like Historical Horse Racing Machines.
Wednesday’s informational hearing will be held at Littleton High School. A spokesperson for the proposed casino stressed the project is still “in its very early stages” and said the public meeting is simply a way to gauge support in the community.
A different company has plans to build a casino in Lebanon, at a former car dealership. The project is moving through the planning board phase.
