In August, Michigan’s commercial and tribal operators collectively reported total internet gaming (iGaming) gross receipts and gross sports betting receipts of $175.4 million. These figures indicate a 0.4% decrease compared to July.
Specifically, iGaming revenue for August amounted to $152.2 million, while gross sports betting revenue reached $23.2 million. The previous month saw iGaming gross receipts of $153.6 million and gross sports betting receipts of $22.5 million.
When considering the adjusted gross receipts (AGR) for total iGaming and internet sports betting in August, the figures totaled $153.1 million. This comprised $137.2 million from iGaming and $15.9 million from internet sports betting.
These figures reflect a minor 0.7% decrease for iGaming and a 3.0% decrease for sports betting compared to July 2023.
A year-on-year comparison with August 2022 reveals positive trends, with iGaming AGR increasing by 16.8%, while sports betting AGR experienced a modest decline of 1.3%.
The total internet sports betting handle for August reached $218.5 million, marking an 8.8% increase from the $200.8 million handle reported in July 2023.
Michigan’s operators made substantial tax and payment contributions to the state in August, amounting to $29.7 million. This included $28.6 million from internet gaming taxes and fees and $1.1 million from internet sports betting taxes and fees.
In addition to state contributions, the three Detroit casinos contributed $7.3 million in wagering taxes and municipal services fees to the City of Detroit in August. This included $6.9 million from internet gaming taxes and fees and $368,596 from internet sports betting taxes and fees.
Tribal operators also played their part, contributing $3.6 million in payments to governing bodies during August.
It’s worth noting that 15 operators provided internet gaming and internet sports betting services during August. However, as of August 1, Odawa Casinos ceased offering internet sports betting services, resulting in a total of 14 internet sports betting operators in the state.
