Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport has released its latest statistics, indicating a slight drop in passenger traffic for the month of August compared to the previous year and marking the first monthly decline of the year. Passenger counts saw a marginal decrease of 0.5%, although the year-to-date figures from January through the end of August remained notably ahead, showing an 11.6% increase.

In August, a total of 4,620,957 passengers arrived and departed, contributing to a cumulative count of 37,717,008 for the year 2023, 8 News Now reported. This figure stands nearly 4 million passengers higher than the total recorded in the same period of 2022.

As per the report, several factors influenced the August passenger numbers. The return of students to school on August 7 and the impact of extreme weather due to Tropical Storm Hilary in Southern Nevada contributed to a 6.5% decline in passenger levels compared to July.

The recovery trend in international travel continues to be positive, with a substantial 16% increase observed in August 2023 compared to the same month in the previous year. Furthermore, there has been a remarkable 37.3% surge in international travel during the January-August period in 2023 compared to the equivalent timeframe in 2022. Notably, Westjet, Air Canada, and British Airways registered the highest passenger counts among international carriers.

Southwest Airlines, the largest carrier operating at Harry Reid International Airport, accounted for slightly over 40% of the airport’s domestic passengers, with a total of 1,723,074 passengers for the month of August. The carrier maintained a strong performance, remaining 13.8% ahead of the previous year’s pace.

Spirit Airlines continued to hold its position as the second-largest carrier at Reid International Airport, followed by Delta, American Airlines, and United Airlines.
