The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has released visitor arrival figures in Macau for the month of April. Macau welcomed 2,600,717 visitors in the month, up 14.4% year-on-year and representing 75.8% of arrivals during the same month in pre-pandemic 2019. The number was, however, down 4.4% month-on-month.
According to the government body, same-day visitors in April totaled 1,349,927, which was up by 23.0% year-on-year, while overnight visitors totaled 1,250,790, up by 6.3%.
The average length of stay of visitors was stable year-on-year at 1.2 days; the duration for overnight visitors (2.3 days) rose by 0.1 days, while for same-day visitors (0.2 days) went down by 0.1 days.
When it came to the source of visitors, the number of visitors from mainland China was 1,737,314, an increase of 25.3% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the number of visitors traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme was 793,351, down by 3.0% year-on-year. The number of visitors from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area was 792,949, up by 28.6% year-on-year.
Macau also saw 581,646 visitors from Hong Kong, down by 22.0% year-on-year, while arrivals from Taiwan amounted to 73,460, up by 120.6%. The number of visitors from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan returned to 74.2%, 83.5%, and 80.0% of the corresponding levels in the same month of 2019, respectively.
The number of international visitors recorded in April was 208,297, an increase of 91.9% year-on-year, back to 68.6% of the figure in the same month of 2019. Regarding the Southeast Asian markets, the number of visitors from Indonesia was 19,571, up by 22.0% over the same month of 2019. The number of visitors from the Philippines (35,851), Malaysia (17,942), and Thailand (16,492) returned to 86.6%, 92.7%, and 90.6% of the respective figures in April 2019.
The agency also shared visitation numbers for the Northeast Asian markets. These include the Republic of Korea at 37,493 and Japan at 8,307, recovering to 60.9% and 30.6% of the corresponding levels in the same month of 2019. As for long-haul markets, visitors from the USA stood at 12,872, rebounding to 58.5% of the April 2019 figure.
The first four months of 2024 saw an increase in visitor arrivals by 58.9% year-on-year to 11,476,474, recovering to 83.2% of the level in the same period in 2019. Same-day visitors (6,141,648) and overnight visitors (5,334,826) grew by 80.3% and 39.8% year-on-year respectively. However, the average length of stay of visitors shortened by 0.1 days year-on-year to 1.2 days, with that of overnight visitors (2.2 days) rising by 0.1 days and same-day visitors (0.2 days) decreasing by 0.1 days.
