The Malta Gaming Authority and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) have entered into a new Memorandum of Understanding, building on their existing relationship to strengthen the collaborative efforts between the two gaming regulators.
In light of the transnational nature of the gambling industry, both the MGA and the AGCO acknowledge the necessity of international cooperation, the authorities said in a statement. Both regulators said they align on common objectives and values in overseeing the gaming sector, including protecting the public interest, safeguarding vulnerable individuals from gambling harm, and consumer protection.
The new MoU aims to further strengthen the existing collaboration between the two bodies, facilitating the exchange of regulatory information and best practices, and mutual operational assistance concerning gaming operators.
It also aims to cultivate a safer and more secure gaming environment across both jurisdictions, as it enables the MGA and the AGCO to perform their functions more effectively, according to a press release.
MGA CEO Charles Mizzi commented: “Our ongoing collaboration with AGCO has yielded tangible results in the past, and through this MoU we are committed to further bolstering our inter-jurisdictional relationship. Our focus remains on fostering the exchange of information, with the overarching goal of improving our regulatory practices and addressing mutual challenges effectively.”
In other recent developments, the MGA hosted the Gaming Regulators European Forum’s (GREF) 2024 conference in Malta from 20 to 22 May. This event united gaming regulators from over 25 countries, creating a dynamic platform to tackle pressing industry challenges and exchange invaluable insights, MGA said in a statement.
This year was the first time regulators from other continents were present at the event. Topics discussed ranged from the MGA’s ESG code, responsible gambling, digital and innovation, international perspectives on gambling regulation, anti-money laundering, and a geographical approach to gambling.
