The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) has updated its list of approved sports wagers and clarified betting regulations for the public ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The document outlines legal wagers that can be placed with online and retail Iowa sportsbooks and details the current betting rules and policies, Covers reported.
A significant rule in the IRGC’s update is the prohibition of bets on a country’s total medal count. For example, Iowa bettors cannot place futures bets on which country will win the most gold medals, nor can they wager on the total number of gold medals a country will win. This ban also applies to specific disciplines, so there will be no betting lines on the number of medals a nation will win in sports like swimming or gymnastics.
The IRGC also highlighted that betting on athletes under the age of 18 in individual events is not allowed. Any event featuring an athlete under 18 will not be available for betting in Iowa sportsbooks. Additionally, wagering on finals where an under-18 athlete competed in the heats or qualifiers is prohibited, even if that athlete does not reach the final.
However, this restriction does not apply to team events, including partner events like doubles tennis. Markets for these events can be offered by Iowa sportsbooks even if one team member is under 18. Prop wagers will not be available for any contest featuring an under-18 athlete, including bets on other athletes in those events, the report said.
