Global sports betting giant Flutter Entertainment has appointed Mark Shaw as its Director of Global Payments Strategy.
Shaw brings extensive experience from the payments, finance, and technology sectors, having previously held senior positions at Visa, Barclays, TSB, and most recently Spotify. Shaw announced his new role on LinkedIn, revealing he has been leading Flutter’s payments operations for the past month.
“After leaving Spotify earlier in the year, I’m pleased to say I’ve started up (and am now one month into) a new role as Director of Global Payments Strategy for Flutter Entertainment Plc, the world’s largest online sports betting and igaming operator,” Shaw wrote.
“As a Group, Flutter operates some of the world’s most innovative, diverse and distinctive sports betting and gaming brands as part of a globally federated business model – from FanDuel and Paddy Power to Sportsbet, Betfair, PokerStars, Sisal and more. The scale, growth and diversity of the business is incredible.”
Shaw’s career began in 2003 at Barclays before he moved to Visa in 2007 as Senior Manager of Group Strategy. By the end of his tenure at Visa in 2011, Shaw had risen to Vice President – Mobile Payments Strategy. He then joined Vocalink as a Strategy Lead before returning to banking at TSB in 2018 as Head of Strategy and Design – Payments. In October 2019, Shaw transitioned to Spotify as Director of Payments Strategy.
At Flutter, Shaw will work with local payment teams to advance the company’s payment infrastructure, leveraging his expertise to enhance growth and efficiency across the group. He is expected to drive innovation in areas such as open banking, digital wallets, and the application of AI for KYC, AML, and fraud prevention processes.
“It’s a big change from Spotify in so many ways,” Shaw noted, “but new challenges and learning are the only constants in life, so it’s time to get stuck in and help ‘Change The Game’.”
Shaw’s appointment underscores the growing importance of advanced payments technologies in the betting industry. Flutter’s interest in innovations such as cryptocurrency and blockchain, alongside Shaw’s involvement with the Bank of England’s CBDC Technology Forum, highlights the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of financial technology in the gaming sector.
