The proposed casino in Times Square backed by rapper Jay-Z, SL Green, and Caesars Entertainment is facing strong opposition from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). The union, which represents the majority of Broadway theater workers, has expressed significant concerns about the project.
In a statement to The New York Post, IATSE criticized the idea of placing a casino in the heart of the theater district, arguing that it would be detrimental to Broadway. “A casino in New York would add a new dimension to New York City’s vibrant entertainment industry but placing it amidst our theater district would be a mistake,” the union stated.
They emphasized that casinos are designed to keep patrons inside, which could negatively impact the local businesses that rely on theatergoers.
The union also highlighted the ongoing recovery of Broadway from the financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting that a casino might hinder this progress. “Meanwhile, our iconic theater district and Broadway are still recovering from the financial hardship brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic,” they added.
The casino proposal for 1515 Broadway is supported by SL Green, Caesars, and Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation. Despite its high-profile backing, the plan is encountering growing resistance.
A survey released in May indicated that 71% of registered voters living in or near Times Square oppose the casino. The poll was funded by the No Times Square Casino Coalition, which includes the influential Broadway League.
“Having a casino in Times Square is not going to increase attendance at our venues,” said Carl Mulert, national business agent of IATSE Local 829, which represents thousands of stage, lighting, and costume designers.
He also noted that traffic congestion in Times Square would worsen with the addition of a casino. “It’s already incredibly congested. We don’t want more. It’s not good for Broadway,” Mulert stated.
Despite the opposition, the casino bid has garnered support from other unions, including the Actors’ Equity Association and Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians. Brett Herschenfeld, executive vice president of SL Green, noted that these unions believe a new gaming and entertainment destination would strengthen the theater industry.
“They are joined by 17 local unions of the Building & Construction Trades Council that support Caesars Palace Times Square and believe a new entertainment destination will bring strong, well-paying jobs to New York City,” Herschenfeld said.
An Actors’ Equity spokesperson echoed this sentiment, highlighting the efforts made by SL Green to collaborate with the Broadway community. “They’ve put in considerable effort to genuinely understand the ecosystem they’re entering so they can become positive contributors to a better Times Square and a better Broadway – better for New Yorkers, better for visitors, and better for the Equity actors and stage managers who make Broadway the premier destination it is,” the spokesperson stated.
The Times Square casino proposal is among several being considered in New York City. Other notable proposals include a plan from Mets owner Steven Cohen for a venue near Citi Field in Queens, a Related Companies/Wynn proposal for Hudson Yards, and a Thor Equities proposal for Coney Island. Each of these proposals faces its own set of community and political challenges.
State gaming regulators are expected to award up to three licenses in the NYC area by the end of next year, with winning bidders required to pay a minimum $500 million license fee.
