Since its launch in August 2023, more than 28,000 Australians have registered to self-exclude from all licensed online and phone wagering services through BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register. The initiative, introduced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), aims to help individuals manage their gambling habits and reduce the associated harms.

The BetStop register offers a range of self-exclusion options, allowing individuals to opt-out of gambling services for as little as three months or as long as a lifetime. The ACMA reported that nearly 50% of those who registered were aged 30 and under, with around 80% under the age of 40. Furthermore, approximately 40% of registrants chose to self-exclude permanently, indicating a strong commitment to long-term change.

Fewer than 20% of registrants selected the minimum three-month exclusion period, and over 14% have since extended or reactivated their self-exclusion.

ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin commented on the register’s impact during its first year: “Online gambling can cause a great deal of harm to individuals, their families, and friends, so it’s encouraging that so many people have decided to take the step and register to self-exclude.”

O’Loughlin highlighted the proactive approach of younger Australians, noting their early decisions to limit the role of online gambling in their lives. She also emphasized the importance of support systems, as many registrants have nominated someone to help them through the self-exclusion process. “Stopping online gambling can be a difficult decision to make—having someone to support you can make the decision much easier,” she added.

Australians can easily register to self-exclude by visiting www.betstop.gov.au, where the process typically takes less than five minutes. The ACMA continues to promote BetStop as a tool for minimizing online gambling harm and encourages individuals to utilize the service if needed.
