Leong Sun Iok, a lawmaker representing the Macao Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM), has called for increased oversight of social responsibility programs within the casino industry. During a recent press conference held to review the legislative work of FAOM’s representatives, Leong highlighted the importance of gaming companies aligning with government efforts to support employment, develop local talent, and foster economic diversification in Macao.
Leong pointed out that under the new gambling license terms, gaming companies are required to fulfill a range of social responsibilities. He emphasized the need for the government to monitor these commitments actively and to publicize the companies’ performance in these areas. This transparency, he believes, is crucial for achieving the intended economic and social benefits for the broader community.
One of the significant concerns raised by Leong was the employment security of satellite field employees, a workforce segment that is facing uncertainty as their transition period ends next year. He urged the government to provide clear guidance on the future of these operations, ensuring that the job security of these workers is safeguarded.
Additionally, Leong advocated for the extension and expansion of the government’s consumption rewards program, which aims to stimulate local spending by offering incentives to residents.
He suggested that gaming companies could play a more active role in promoting economic revitalization by using their resources and organizing events. One proposed method was the issuance of coupons to participants, which could be used at local businesses, thereby boosting the community’s economy.
Leong also stressed the importance of continuously evaluating the government’s efforts to revitalize the six major gaming-related sectors and host large-scale events. According to him, non-gaming projects should be oriented towards fostering emerging industries, identifying new areas of economic growth, and developing high-tech talent. This approach, he argued, is essential for driving moderate economic diversification in Macao.
