Tropicana Las Vegas has officially received a permit to implode its two hotel towers, clearing the way for a new baseball stadium to host the Oakland Athletics.
The Clark County Building Department issued the demolition permit on September 23, allowing Controlled Demolition Inc. to oversee the implosion of the two 22-story towers. The project, valued at $1.2 million, is part of broader redevelopment plans for the historic Las Vegas Strip property.
Bally’s Corp., the previous operator of the Tropicana, and the Oakland Athletics plan to host a commemorative event, featuring a drone and fireworks display before the towers come down. The implosion is scheduled for 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9.
The removal of the Tropicana hotel towers will make room for a new stadium, which is expected to begin construction in early 2025. The stadium is slated for completion in time for the Athletics’ 2028 season, as the team relocates to Las Vegas.
The Tropicana site will eventually host a 33,000-seat stadium, where the Oakland Athletics are expected to begin their 2028 Major League Baseball season. Separately, Bally’s Corp. plans to build a future resort on the remaining area surrounding the stadium.
The Tropicana, a long-standing fixture on the Las Vegas Strip, closed in April ahead of these redevelopment plans.
