Ohio sports bettors have once again shattered records, generating over $1 billion in total sports betting handle in November. This marked only the second time the Buckeye State has surpassed the billion-dollar milestone since legalizing sports betting in January 2023.
The Ohio Casino Control Commission reported that the November handle totaled $1,024,326,837, driven by increased wagering activity across the state’s digital platforms.
November’s handle trailed just behind the historic debut month of January 2023, which saw $1.11 billion in total handle. The sustained high level of betting activity has cemented Ohio’s position as one of the leading sports betting markets in the United States.
Alongside the impressive handle, the state reported $117,044,624 in taxable revenue for the month, making November the second most lucrative period for sports betting operators in Ohio’s short history.
The revenue figures translated into over $23.4 million in tax revenue for the state, based on Ohio’s 20% tax rate on sports betting. Despite the impressive numbers, the November tax haul paled in comparison to the record-setting January 2023 figures, when the state collected more than $41 million in taxes.
FanDuel and DraftKings emerged as the dominant players in Ohio’s online sports betting market, accounting for a significant portion of the state’s handle. FanDuel led all operators in November, reporting $351.1 million in online bets. DraftKings closely followed with $329.8 million. These two companies have consistently outperformed their competitors in Ohio, leaving other operators scrambling to carve out a share of the market.
Bet365 held onto the third position among Ohio’s online sportsbooks, recording $76.6 million in handle for November. BetMGM and Fanatics rounded out the top five operators with $72.2 million and $54.6 million in handle, respectively. These figures highlight the dominance of the leading operators, with no other sportsbook in the state managing to break the $100 million mark for the month.
The taxable revenue figures reflected a similar trend, with FanDuel and DraftKings leading the pack. FanDuel generated $46.5 million in taxable revenue for November, while DraftKings reported $37.8 million. Bet365 contributed $8.7 million in taxable revenue, followed by BetMGM with $6.4 million and Fanatics with $4.7 million.
Ohio’s sports betting market has experienced steady growth throughout 2024, with total taxable revenue reaching $847.1 million through the first 11 months of the year. This has resulted in nearly $170 million in tax revenue for the state.
