The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced that it will file a complaint before the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) regarding illegal betting in the second division “to determine the corresponding responsibilities.”

Following the investigation into the manipulation of matches in the Premier and Expansion Leagues, the FMF informed in a press release that it had taken new measures to prevent this type of illegal conduct to preserve the integrity of players, clubs, and the industry in general.

The entity detailed that on Saturday, February 15, seven players from the Real Apodaca and Correcaminos clubs involved in match manipulation were punished with 57 years of suspension, based on the articles of Appendix IV of the FMF Sanctions Regulations, as well as Articles 27 and 30 of the FIFA Code of Ethics and article 11 of the FMF Code of Ethics.

Likewise, on February 19, an official letter was sent to all league presidents, including the amateur sector, to warn of the consequences of these illegal practices.

The FMF also informed FIFA of the sanctions to be applied at the international level, as well as the actions being taken to prevent these behaviors in Mexican soccer, and reinforced the monitoring service of the alert system contracted with the company Genius Sports.

Furthermore, the entity highlighted that, since 2021, it has been working with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in the Global Program to Safeguard Sport from Corruption and Economic Crimes “to implement the best international practices.”

The FMF also informed that, in addition to the complaint before the FGR, the support of Congress will be sought to promote a bill to toughen the sanctions for those responsible for illegal betting and manipulation of matches.

Prevention initiatives

In coordination with the Mexican Association of Football Players (AMFPRO), the FMF will conduct awareness workshops with players on the importance of caring for the integrity of their professional careers and our sport.

The FMF will also work hand in hand with the corresponding federal authorities to facilitate the prevention and investigation of these cases and will strengthen its Integrity Department to protect all its competitions, in line with FIFA’s provisions and objectives.

“The FMF reaffirms its absolute rejection of this type of illegal practices that should have no place in our sport and we will continue working with clubs, authorities, and players in favor of transparency, justice, and the integrity of soccer in Mexico,” the institution concluded.
