The Brazilian federal government anticipates collecting up to R$1.86 billion (US$327 million) annually in inspection fees from legally operating fixed-odds betting companies, according to calculations obtained through the Access to Information Act (LAI) by Valor Econômico. The revenue estimates follow the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) establishing a structured fee system in February, categorizing operators into eight payment bands based on their revenue levels.
Companies with monthly revenues of up to R$30.8 million (US$5.4 million) will pay a minimum fee of R$54,000 (US$9,500) per month, while those earning more than R$660.96 million (US$116.3 million) will be charged R$1.944 million (US$342,000) per month.
Given that 80 legal entities currently operate within Brazil’s regulated betting market, monthly revenue from these fees is projected to range between R$4.353 million (US$765,000) and R$155.52 million (US$27.35 million), leading to annual estimates between R$52.2 million (US$9.2 million) and R$1.86 billion (US$327 million).
In addition to the current operators, 203 new companies have applied for authorization to enter the market, and their inclusion could further increase government revenue.
The regulation of Brazil’s fixed-odds sports betting market officially took effect on January 1, 2025, requiring operators to comply with several measures to maintain legal status. These include using the “.bet.br” domain, implementing facial recognition for bettors, and linking gambling activities to the Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF) for verification.
The SPA has blocked 11,500 domains of unauthorized betting websites for non-compliance with national regulations. Meanwhile, the federal government has formed a working group to address concerns related to compulsive gambling, aiming to develop strategies to prevent addiction and provide support to affected individuals and communities.
