A
s Louisiana in-person sports betting has been up and running as the state approved it in late October, online sports betting in the state is a different issue. With every prospect of launching by the end of this month now shaking, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board’s Chairman Ronnie Johns aims for a 2022 launch as soon as January 1st.
Sports betting in the state was planned to kick off in the state in state-licensed casinos first, as they have already been investigated. Vendors for betting websites and apps need a full review that required more time.
According to Johns, the Louisiana State Police is currently working to verify sportsbook partners and allow the distribution of online sports betting licenses to begin soon. “We need to do this the right way. Louisiana State Police is on it, they’re working on a daily basis to have it up and running. We’re trying to have it as fast as we can, and I’m going to predict the first of the year for when we have mobile”, he said during an interview with Saturday Down South.
Louisiana allows 20 sports betting licenses, one each for the state’s 15 riverboat casinos, four racinos and one land-based casino, all of which also include two mobile licenses. Therefore, there could be up to 41 “skins” for online betting.
So far, FanDuel and DraftKings have been greenlit in the state to offer Daily Fantasy Sports contests, and will also be part of the online sports betting launch as well.
Caesars Entertainment has also been confirmed and is currently up for download in the state. Even though bettors can not wager through it yet, they can register and fund accounts. The retail market is already live since the end of October, when Caesars launched in-person sports betting at its properties Harrah’s New Orleans and Horseshoe Bossier City. Each property currently takes wagers at their temporary sportsbooks, and will later on unveil their new Caesars Sportsbooks.
In the fall of 2022, Isle of Capri Lake Charles will be renovated into Horseshoe Lake Charles and reopen with an additional Caesars Sportsbook location. The company has also signed to rebrand New Orleans’ downtown stadium as the Caesars Superdome.
WynnBET has also confirmed its market access in October, making it the 8th state in which it operates, including Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Tennessee and Virginia.
Barstool Sportsbook could also be part of the Louisiana online betting market as Penn National Gaming has two properties that currently offer in-person sports betting: L’Auberge Casino Baton Rouge and Boomtown Casino Hotel, which have been receiving bets since the first of the month.
Genius Sports has also recently received a temporary license to operate in the state for an initial six months, and it is currently waiting for its full license authorization.
Sports betting is legal in 55 of 64 parishes that approved the measure in the November 2020 general election. In-person and online sports betting is not permitted for residents living in Caldwell, Catahoula, Franklin, Jackson, LaSalle, Sabine, Union, West Carroll and Winn.
