iGaming operator and supplier GAN is set for a leadership transition following the surprising resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Dermot Smurfit, after a 21-year tenure in the role.

Seamus McGill, the current Chair of the company’s board, has stepped into the role of Interim CEO. Dermot Smurfit, although relinquishing his CEO position, remains a significant stockholder and is currently in negotiations with GAN regarding a potential consultation role within the company, the company said.

McGill brings a wealth of experience to his new role, boasting 23 years of expertise in the gaming and technology sectors. His career includes serving as the President of JOINGO and a five-year tenure at Aristocrat Technologies as Chief Operating Officer.

Previously, he was president of JOINGO, a mobile software company. During his time at Aristocrat, McGill played a pivotal role in driving growth in North America, including a strategic shift towards recurring revenue games.

Prior to that, McGill served as President of Cyberview Technology and held various positions at WMS Gaming. His gaming career commenced at Mikohn Gaming, and he has held key roles in Japan and Singapore.

McGill expressed his appreciation for Dermot Smurfit’s two-decade commitment to GAN, highlighting the significant accomplishments and milestones achieved during his leadership. McGill, who has been a member of GAN’s board since 2014, emphasized his deep understanding of the company, its talented teams, and its market position.

I am honored to assume leadership of all of the company’s executive functions and have been heavily involved in our ongoing strategic review process. We will continue to evaluate the indications of interest that we have received and will work to optimize the process and its outcome for shareholders in due course,” he stated.

Last month, GAN reported a mixed second-quarter performance, with a three percent decline in group-wide revenue primarily due to the underperformance of its B2B unit. However, B2C operations remained steady, contributing to the gradual reduction of net losses.
