A group of 13 Nebraska state senators is taking a firm stand against the legalization of mobile gambling, arguing that the risks far outweigh the benefits, particularly as the state debates further measures to reduce property taxes.

Nebraska, one of 24 states that has yet to legalize online sports betting, recently allowed land-based casinos to operate under the premise of property tax relief. However, the group of senators contends that this promise has not been fulfilled, and they warn that expanding gambling, especially through mobile platforms, could exacerbate issues related to addiction and community harm.

“Expanding gambling further will inevitably lead to expanding the associated addictions and adds to more suffering in our communities,” the senators said in a joint statement. They particularly expressed concern about mobile sports betting, which they believe could transform every cell phone into a “24/7 handheld gambling device.”

The senators’ opposition comes as mobile wagering has seen rapid growth across the United States since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal ban on sports gambling in 2018. Neighboring states like Iowa and Kansas have already legalized mobile gambling, reaping significant financial returns.

Citing data from the National Council on Problem Gambling, the senators highlighted a 30% increase in gambling addiction risk linked to online sports betting. The council’s helpline has also reported a 150% increase in calls, with 20% of college students reportedly gambling using financial aid funds.

While proponents of mobile gambling argue that it could generate substantial tax revenue — like the $44 million Iowa has collected since 2019 — the Nebraska senators remain unconvinced. They emphasize that despite the state’s recent move to allow casino operations, they are determined to prevent mobile gambling from taking root in Nebraska.

“Nebraska very recently legalized casinos largely on the promise of property tax relief that has failed to manifest itself,” the senators stated, underscoring their concerns about further gambling expansion.

Senators John Lowe, Ray Aguilar, Joni Albrecht, Robert Clements, Robert Dover, Steve Erdman, Steve Halloran, Brian Hardin, Rick Holdcroft, Loren Lippincott, Rita Sanders, and Julie Slama issued the statement.
