The iconic Tropicana Las Vegas hotel towers will be imploded in the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 9, to make way for the Oakland Athletics’ new stadium, Bally’s Corporation confirmed on Monday. The demolition will be part of a commemorative event featuring a drone and fireworks display.

Pending final approval, the implosion is scheduled for about 2:30 a.m., minimizing disruptions to traffic and reducing dust. Bally’s Corp., the owner of Tropicana, and the A’s are organizing a celebratory event the night before, culminating in the explosive demolition of the Rat Pack-era resort.

The Tropicana, which closed on April 2, is set to be replaced by a $1.5 billion ballpark for the A’s, with construction slated to begin in April 2025. The stadium is expected to be ready for the team’s move to Las Vegas for the 2028 Major League Baseball season.

Clark County must still approve a final permit for the demolition. Controlled Demolition, the contractor overseeing the project, plans to bring down the 22-story Tropicana Club Tower and the 22-story Paradise Tower in a single explosive event.

Bally’s has been granted a permit, valid from September 30 through October 8, to prepare for the implosion. Asbestos abatement work, which is ongoing, must be completed before the final approval is granted.

The ballpark project is progressing as the A’s finalize agreements with the Las Vegas Stadium Authority and Clark County. A community benefits agreement has already been approved, and development, lease, and non-relocation agreements are expected to be finalized by early December.

The stadium project will be partially funded through $380 million in public funds, including $180 million in tax credits from the state of Nevada and $120 million in bonds from Clark County. The A’s plan to use $350 million of public funding, supplemented by $300 million in debt financing and $850 million in equity from the team’s owners, the Fisher family.

The next meeting of the Las Vegas Stadium Authority is scheduled for October 17, where updated versions of the agreements will be presented, moving the project closer to breaking ground.
